Child Passenger Safety Week - Pregnant Drivers

If you are pregnant, sitting in the car can be an uncomfortable experience. However, it is extremely important that you take all of the necessary safety precautions to ensure a safe ride for you and your unborn child.

Always wear your seat belt. Even with a pregnant belly, you should always wear your seat belt, even if it is uncomfortable. Just as when you're not pregnant, wearing a seat belt is the best protection in the event of a crash. And since you are carrying precious cargo, you can never be too safe. You should wear the shoulder belt around your chest and shoulders, away from your neck, while the lap belt should be secured snugly under your belly and across your hips.

Adjust your seat. Your seat should always be as far back as possible. If you are in the driver's seat, be sure to position your seat as far away from the wheel as possible while still being able to reach the pedals. However, you should always  strive to keep at least 10 inches between you and the steering wheel.

Buckle up even if your vehicle has airbags. Air bags are not meant to serve as an alternative to seat belts, rather they are meant to work with the seat belt in the event of a high-impact collision. Without being properly buckled in, there is the chance of being thrown into an air bag or even be ejected from the vehicle during a crash, which can prove fatal to both you and your child.
