Things to Remember when Filing a Claim for Michigan Auto Insurance
Involved in a car accident in Michigan? Here are a few things to remember when you file a claim.
- No matter who is at fault in an accident, victims are entitled to unlimited medical benefits, as well as rehabilitation benefits if needed. They are also entitled to up to three years of wage loss benefits and up to 20 dollars as fee for replacement services when required.
- Michigan drivers gave up their right to sue as part of the no-fault policy and this is followed in the Michigan auto insurance policies. Filing lawsuits is only possible if a victim was seriously injured, if one party is not a registered driver in Michigan and the car is not registered in Michigan, and if the accident happened outside of Michigan.
- Unless you have purchased collision or comprehensive coverage, you will have to pay for repairs to your vehicle, or damage to the other person’s vehicle that was not parked properly based on standards. A standard policy in this state does not cover vehicle theft either.
- Michigan auto insurance policies have a statute of limitation clause, or a time limit for filing of claims. It is one year after the accident took place for claims made to companies. Filing of lawsuits has a time limit of 3 years.
- If you were a victim of a car accident and you do not have car insurance yourself, you may still be covered by a policy of a relative that you are living with, or the policy of the car you were on during the accident.
- The first step to filing a claim is filling out a form. The form should only contain factual and accurate information. In some cases a legal statement or oath is asked, in which case a lawyer should be contacted to help you.
Michigan auto insurance policies also entitle you to mileage benefits. This includes any transportation expenses incurred during the course of treatment for injuries or health concerns due to the accident. You are to be compensated through an established per mile amount for visits to the hospital, clinic, rehabilitation center, or other medical visits required for these injuries to heal. If you are in a wheelchair due to the injuries, the purchase of a customized van for you to use can also be covered. These benefits are lifetime benefits included in all Michigan auto insurance policies, as long as the conditions are due to the accident that resulted to the injuries being treated.
